Warrior wrestlers win Sectional titles, Stitcher qualifies for State Gymnastics Meet, Swimmers take third in league meet and boys’ basketball team stomps Sullivan.
Wrestling Feb. 11 Warriors Star Performers: Artie Bess (220) and Lenny Bloom (145) won Sectional championships. Who’s Next: Bess and Bloom compete at the State Meet Friday and Saturday in Champaign. The Bottom Line: Bess, the third ranked wrestler in the state in his class, ran his record for the season to 36-1. Bloom, 38-1, is ranked eighth. Gymnastics Feb. 9 Warriors Star Performer: Christine Stitcher scored 36.825 in all around and 9.275 in both floor exercise and uneven parallel bars at the Niles North Sectional. Other Notable Warrior Performances: Mack Watts added 11 points while grabbing six boards, dishing off four assists and taking the ball away from the Giants once. Five other Warriors to continue sports careers.
Deerfield High School senior athletes Joey Calistri and Austin Jones signed national letters of intent Wednesday to compete in their sports at the college level. Calistri will play soccer for Northwestern University while Jones will be a free safety on the football team at Alabama A & M. At least five other Warriors on their way to university sports careers including basketball player Liz Yucknut, tennis star Jason Brown, Illinois state diving champion Erin Purdy, girls soccer player Megan Perna and triple jumper and Patch columnist Danny Katz. Yucknut solves Grayslake riddle but Deerfield still falls.
Jan. 30 The Final Score: Grayslake North 46, Deerfield 31 Warriors Star Performer: Liz Yucknut scored 18 points, more than half her team’s total. Who’s Next: The Warriors travel to Maine East at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Bottom Line: A solid defense effort by Grayslake North was too much for the Warriors to overcome, according to Deerfield Coach Mike Muldrow. After fighting for a 26-25 halftime lead, the Warriors were held to only four second half points.

Jan. 25 The Final Score: Vernon Hills 56, Deerfield 21 Warriors Star Performer: Liz Yucknut scored eight points, stole the ball four times and grabbed three rebounds. Who’s Next: The Warriors entertain Grayslake Central at 7 p.m. Monday. The Bottom Line: Deerfield made only 15 percent of its shots from the field giving the Warriors an uphill battle all night. Trailing 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, The Warriors fell behind 26-12 at halftime as the Cougars continued to run away with the game. Deerfield is 5-19 for the season.
