Deerfield looks to get back to the playoffs after missing out last season.
Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early-season victories or losses. And they are completely and utterly subjective. PRESEASON RANKINGS 1. Maine South – As the three-time defending Class 8A state champions, there are few teams in Illinois, let alone the country, that could match up with the Hawks. QB Matt Alviti returns for his junior season and he’ll have plenty of help in the backfield with senior RB Paul Preston. 2. Loyola Academy – If not for Maine South, we could be talking about the Ramblers as back-to-back state champions. But losses to the …

Marc Pagano and Sam Rogers scored two goals each to propel Deerfield past Carmel in the quarterfinals of the AHAI Blackhawk Cup.
The Deerfield hockey team is picking the perfect time to play its best hockey. After going 10-18-3 in the regular season, the Warriors are now 7-0-1 in post season play after topping Carmel 7-4 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Blackhawk Cup State Tournament (White Varsity Division). "You always hope a team's going to peak at the right time and that's what they've done," Deerfield Head Coach Chuck Rinaldo said. "They've always had it in them. They've always had the opportunity to play well and win the big games. It's just a matter of doing at the right time." Marc Pagano and Sam Rogers led the way for the Warriors, each scoring two goals. Deerfield overcomes 11 point first half deficit, uses clutch free throw shooting to win second straight regional title.
For Deerfield senior captain Sam Sternberg, preparation met opportunity Friday night, as the Warriors topped Barrington 45-41 in overtime in the Class 4A Libertyville Regional Final. With the Warriors clinging to a two point lead in the extra frame and Barrington (19-11) inbounding under their own hoop, Sternberg stole the inbounds pass and was fouled at the other end of the floor just before taking a shot. He stepped to the line and knocked down two clutch free throws to give the Warriors a four point lead. "On that inbounds pass, we actually scouted that play," Sternberg said. "I knew that was coming and I was thinking all last night that I was going to steal that pass if they threw it." Sternberg's free throws helped seal an …

Warriors almost overcome 10-point first half vs. Vikings.
If you told Deerfield coach Bret Just his team would surrender only 23 points in the first half to Niles North, he would’ve taken it in a heartbeat . Unfortunately, the Warriors could counter with only 10 points of their own in the first half and never could quite get over the hump in a 52-45 loss on the road to CSL North foe Niles North. “I was satisfied we had given up 23 points in the first half against an explosive offensive team,” Just said. “I think our offense hurt us more in the first half than our defense.” The Vikings jumped out quickly by forcing turnovers and getting the ball inside to Abdel Nader. The University of New Mexico recruit had six points in the first quarter and Niles North led 13-4 only five minutes in to the game…
