Pending court decision would take golf courses off tax roll and shift burden to all community taxpayers.
A property tax appeal by the Onwentsia Club of Lake Forest could have far reaching effects on Lake County taxpayers and those in Deerfield in particular as well as communities throughout the state. As the appeal stands, country club land like that belonging to Briarwood and Ravinia Green Country Clubs, including improvements such as clubhouses, would be granted open space status and therefore would receive a zero assessment. Get local news in a daily email from Patch. It's like getting a free newspaper. Learn more. “The public needs to know what benefits these organizations, country clubs, are getting. Should we be providing tax relief for them?” Lake County Assessor Martin Paulsen said. He said the ruling could result in a significant …

West Deerfield Township is about to send out assessment notices with some homeowners using an attorney to appeal
It may not be the sexiest topic in the world, but for homeowners in West Deerfield Township, a crucial period is upon them as their annual property tax assessments are not too far away. Inevitably, that means some property holders will get to know the process of appealing a ruling. It may not be easy, but it can be beneficial if the proper steps are taken leading to a reduction of the property tax bill. Assessor will help residents through appeal process.
Editor’s Note—This is the second story in a two part series on property taxes in West Deerfield Township. Help is available for people who want to reduce their property taxes and the place to start is with West Deerfield Assessor Tom Healy. Since there’s only 30 days to file an appeal, taxpayers must respond by Nov. 28. And usually their first stop is at Healy’s West Deerfield Township office to pick up the necessary appeal. The paperwork can also be downloaded at www.lakecountyil.gov/boardofreview. “We have had a flood of calls in recent years complaining about rising property tax assessments and many who have appealed to the County Board of Review,” Healy said. “However, this year is starting off rather slowly because property values …

Property tax assessment forms now in hands of homeowners
Editor’s Note—This is the first story in a two-part series about property taxes in Deerfield. Though Deerfield property values have dropped in the last year real estate taxes may very well increase according to West Deerfield Township Assessor Tom Healy. Healy is waiting for a deluge of phone calls, but so far the calls have been reasonably light. This is the time of year when the affable West Deerfield Township Assessor and his two- person staff are usually swamped with complaints since Township residents and businesses have just received their blue Property Tax Assessment notices from the Lake County Assessor’s office. Healy is one of 18 elected assessors in Lake County, one for each township. He said West Deerfield Township has the …

Ridiculous that private clubs get any tax breaks! If designated as public lands, then privatization is OUT. You can't have it both ways. But then again, I won't be surprised when this winds up at the foot of taxpayers to take care of. Typical of our left wing society enthralled with Obama's socialism.   more ›
