Deerfield Wrestlers Fail to Advance to State Tourney Semi-Finals

Three DHS wrestlers competed in the state tournament this weekend in Champaign.

Three Deerfield High School wrestlers finished their season at the state championship meet this weekend in Palatine, though none were able to advance to the semi-final round. Andrew Mehrholz was beaten by Mike Burke, of Homewood-Flossmoor, Dec 6-2, in the 106-pound division. Ari Sapinsley was beaten by Notay Jackson of Mount Carmel, Dec 7-3, in the 152-pound division. Deerfield High School Wrestlers Qualify for State Tournament

Three Deerfield High School wrestlers qualified for state at a sectional tournament in Barrington last weekend.

Three Deerfield High School wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament this past weekend after placing third at the Barrington sectional meet, according to IHSA results.  The following DHS wrestlers will now compete at the state tournament, to be held Feb. 14 to 16 at Assembly Hall in Champaign: Learn more about the Deerfield High School Warriors wrestling program at http://dhs.dist113.org/athletics/WR/Pages/default.aspx. Warrior Wrestlers Advance to State Finals

Three Deerfield High School wrestlers will compete this week in Champaign for the state title.

Feb. 9 Warriors Star Performers:  Andrew Mehrholz (106), Ari Sapinsley (152), and Jim Kirby (195) all advanced from Sectionals to the State Finals. Mehrholz finished first in his division, Sapinsley fourth and Kirby fourth. Other notable performances: Colton Emmerich (170) finished fifth in his division, just short of qualifying. What's Next: The state finals run Thursday through Saturday in Champaign.

Deerfield High School Wrestlers to Compete at Lake Zurich Saturday

Deerfield will take on Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Palatine and Stevenson.

The Deerfield High School wrestling team will compete in an important meet at Lake Zurich on Saturday, Feb. 2. The top three individuals will advance into sectionals at Barrington next weekend. The team champion moves on to face the winner of the Grant Sectional with the winner going to the team State Finals, according to Deerfield Coach Marc Pechter. Deerfield High School will face off against Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Palatine and Stevenson. The Warriors are currently ranked 18th in the State, according to Illinois Matmen, followed by Barrington at 19 and Cary Grove at 20. Four Blue Jays and three Spartans earn individual championships in Deerfield middle school wrestling tournament.

More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. This week's nominees for Athlete of the Week: Evanston's Leonard Garron, Glenbrook South's Olivia Smoliga, Maine West's Jordan Pessah, Niles West's Molly Kleppin, and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren.

More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. Shumate had 12 points in the victory and helped Niles West move into first …

Sam Samorian: Synonymous With Success

This week's Patch Portrait series also features Wilmette's piano man and Morton Grove's Lady Violet. The words humble, influential and successful do not even begin to describe former Glenbrook North football, wrestling and baseball coach Harold "Sam Samorian." A Rockford native, Samorian graduated from Rockford East High School before attending Drake and Illinois State University. After time spent in the Army, Samorian earned his degree from ISU in 1955 and began his teaching career in central Illinois before moving to Northbrook in 1958. Samorian's first year as head football coach came in 1964, and ten years later, he led the Spartans to their first-ever Class 5A State Championship, upsetting heavily favored East St. Louis, 19-13, in …

VIDEO: Four Warriors Set Sights on State Titles

Local athletes gear up for competition in Champaign and Palatine.

A big weekend is right around the corner for three Deerfield wrestlers and one gymnast who all have a shot at earning state titles. Juniors Artie Bess, Lenny Bloom and Keven Hoogheem will head to Champaign for the wrestling state finals, starting Friday.  Bess won the Deerfield regional title two weeks ago and the Barrington sectional title last week at 215 pounds.  At 135 pounds, Bloom was the lone Warrior to reach the 40-win mark this year, going 40-2.  He took 3rd place at the Barrington Sectional.  Hoogheem took 4th place at 103 pounds. Sophomore gymnast Christine Stitcher will compete for a state title as well this weekend at Palatine High School.  She posted a career-best score of 36.550 at last week's Stevenson sectional.  Although …
