10-Year Old Wins Apple Pie Contest

A tip from Trustee Tom Jester to the young winner’s grandfather got ball rolling.

Little did Nick Shelton, 10, know when he came to stay with grandparents Lois and Mark Nagy of Deerfield for a short while he would become a local celebrity. Shelton learned about the Village’s fourth-annual Apple Pie contest as part of Saturday’s Harvest Fest at the Farmers’ Market from his grandfather and with some nudging from his grandmother decided to enter. Harvest Fest Arrives Saturday

Deerfield Farmers’ Market plans to celebrate local farmers along with games and contests for all ages.

Deerfield’s inaugural Harvest Fest will highlight the Village’s Farmers’ Market from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the northwest corner of Deerfield Road and Robert York Avenue. The entire Farmers’ Market will take place from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Baking and eating contests, children’s activities and the usual bustle of the Deerfield Farmers’ Market will all be incorporated into the Village’s celebration of the fall harvest, according to Farmers’ Market Manager Joan Reed.
