Car Damage Leads to DUI, Drug Arrest

The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

DUI, Drugs and more  Samuel Kim, 24, of Wheeling was arrested May 1 for DUI drugs, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with one headlight, according to Deerfield Police reports.  Police spotted Kim driving in the vicinity of Lake Cook Road and Corporate Drive with only one headlight illuminated and “extensive front end damage which appeared to be fresh,” according to the report. After stopping him, police observed his “reactions seemed low” and the “heavy masking odor of air freshener was coming from the vehicle.”  After further investigation, police learned Kim had three arrests for charges including drugs, liquor and theft, according to the report. Update: Construction Confuses Train Collision Victim

Lake Forest man survives with minor injuries after turning onto rebuilt part of roadway.

(Update, 11 a.m. Wednesday) A Lake Forest man partially confused by construction at the intersection of Half Day and Waukegan Roads was the victim who escaped a collision with a northbound Metra Train Tuesday with minor injuries, according to the Lake County News-Sun . Michael Bungert, 57, was driving his 2010 GMC Terrain southbound on Waukegan Road at approximately 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and attempted to make a right turn onto westbound Half Day Road, according to the News-Sun. The intersection is under heavy construction. Bungert told Bannockburn police he turned in between two barrels where there was space for a car to proceed through, even though there was a solid white line. Police Blotter: Credit Card Theft, Property Damage

"The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction."

Credit Card Theft  Credit cards from an allegedly lost or stolen wallet resulted in unauthorized use of credit cards totaling more than $3,000 on Nov. 18 according to Deerfield Police reports.  A diner at Panera Bread called Deerfield Police and reported a wallet lost or stolen according to the report. A few hours later the person again contacted police after allegedly receiving communication from a credit card company inquiring about unusual use at Jewell-Osco and Office Max according to the report.  According to the report, gift cards were allegedly purchased at both locations. Police reportedly communicated with personnel at both stores and were able to allegedly ascertain through viewing video cameras the purchasers were not the person…

Why is it not common policy for these stores to look at ID's when people purchase gift cards? It seems like as soon as a credit card is stolen this is immediately what the thieves go out and purchase. It's frustrating to continually hear about something like this that can be prevented so easily.   more ›

Police Blotter: Theft From a Motor Vehicle

"The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction."

Theft from a Motor Vehicle  Deerfield police uncovered two alleged burglaries from motor vehicles Nov. 16 in the Dearbrook Mall parking lot near Bally’s Total Fitness according to Deerfield police reports. Police received a call about a break in to an automobile that allegedly occurred while the victim was working out at Bally’s. Upon arriving, police allegedly found a broken out rear window and a ransacked back area of the vehicle according to the report. The person who allegedly called the police reported a lap top computer and bag missing according to the report. Police Blotter: Possession of Stolen Vehicle, DUI

Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle, Retail Theft  What started out as the alleged theft of a basket of groceries from Whole Foods in Deerfield Nov. 8 wound up with Keith Pochter, 54, of Lincolnshire facing charges of alleged possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, according to Deerfield Police reports.  After police received a call from Whole Foods that a man allegedly left the store in a blue Audi sedan, officers stopped Pochter driving on Deerfield Road in the Audi according to the report. The report indicated after checking not only found unbagged groceries as allegedly reported by loss prevention personnel at Whole Foods, but also learned the car was stolen. So, released on a $250,000 bond for theft, then free on bond of $25,000 for bad checks. Then, while free on those bonds he steals again, in possession of a stolen vehicle, no license, no insurance, and he gets out on a $25,000 bond? How many more crimes does he get to commit before they decide he shouldn't be on the street. I'd bet they wouldn't let him go if he was caught in a stolen vehicle …   more ›

Police Blotter: Driving Under the Influence

"The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction."

Driving Under the Influence  Dzmitry Komsa, 29, of Arlington Heights was arrested by Deerfield Police Oct. 29 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol according to Deerfield Police reports.  Police stopped the car Komsa was driving near the intersection of Waukegan and Lake Cook Roads at approximately 2 a.m. Police said Komsa failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath test at the Deerfield Police Station. He was also given tickets for driving an uninsured vehicle and improper lane usage.  Komsa posted a $3,000 bond and was released from the Deerfield Police Station. Intoxicated Customer Spits Racial Slur at Jewel Worker

Man has second encounter with police within 2 weeks that results in an arrest.

On Sept. 6, police pulled into Jewel's parking lot after they witnessed a man who appeared intoxicated yelling at another male outside the store, who later turned out to be the store manager. The employee told officers that Nicholas Thomas had been asked to leave the supermarket after personnel refused to sell him beer. The store manager said Thomas was extremely drunk and got upset about the incident and yelled, “Go back to f------ Mexico,” and then used a racial slur. The manager told officers that he could feel Thomas’s spit hitting his face while he yelled at him. Police arrested the 51-year-old man, who they say is known to sleep under the tollway, for disorderly conduct and criminal trespass to property. His court date is Oct. 27. …

Police Blotter: 3 DUI and 2 Drug Arrests

A hit-and-run accident is among the calls that resulted in charges.

Hit and Run:  Deerfield police responded to a hit-and-run incident near the corner of Techny and Shermer roads on Sept 5. Northbrook police, who were already at the scene when Deerfield officers arrived, had stopped the vehicle. During questioning, authorities said 20-year-old Cristina Paz smelled of burned cannabis. During a search of the Chicago resident’s car, police discovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside. Paz was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and improper lane usage. She’s due in court on Oct. 5. Drunk Driving: Ben Boris Schwartz, 59, of Highland Park, was charged with driving under the influence on Sept. 3. According to police, Schwartz …

Police Blotter: McDonald's Employee Assaulted

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department.

Battery: Nicholas Thomas, 51, of Northbrook, was arrested on Aug. 27 by police near the McDonald's along Waukegan Road. An employee told officers she was mopping the floors around 9 p.m. when Thomas slapped her on the butt and then fled on a bicycle. Thomas, who police say is known to sleep under the tollway, was charged with battery. His court date is Sept. 26. Theft: Police responded to the parking lot of Red Roof Inn in response to a car burglary on Aug. 28. The driver told officers he had parked his 2004 GMC box truck in the lot for the night. Police Blotter: 2 Minors Cited for Breaking Curfew

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department.

Theft: On Aug. 18, police responded to Bally Total Fitness in response to a locker room theft. A man told officers he was showering about 8:30 a.m. when $490 was stolen from his wallet that was inside his pants hanging in the locker. The victim said he did not lock the locker while he was showering. Nothing other than the cash was stolen. --- On Aug. 13, police responded to Honquest Furniture on Waukegan Road in response to a retail theft. A store employee told officers that a metal sign advertising 70 percent off had been stolen from the driveway entrance on Lake Cook Road. Curfew violation: Two minors, ages 13 and 15, were charged with breaking curfew and possession of tobacco by a minor. Police were tipped off about the Deerfield …
