Deerfield Warriors Place 8th in National Tennis Tourney

The Warriors boys tennis team traveled to Louisville, Ky., this past weekend to compete in a national tournament.

The Deerfield High School Warriors boys tennis team placed eighth out of 16 teams at a weekend tournament in Louisville that included some of the best teams an players from across the country, reported the Chicago Tribune. This was the third time the team has participated in the DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships in Kentucky. In 2011, the Warriors placed second, reported the Tribune.

Deerfield High School Wrestlers Qualify for State Tournament

Three Deerfield High School wrestlers qualified for state at a sectional tournament in Barrington last weekend.

Three Deerfield High School wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament this past weekend after placing third at the Barrington sectional meet, according to IHSA results.  The following DHS wrestlers will now compete at the state tournament, to be held Feb. 14 to 16 at Assembly Hall in Champaign: Learn more about the Deerfield High School Warriors wrestling program at http://dhs.dist113.org/athletics/WR/Pages/default.aspx. Deerfield Struggles in Loss

Warrior offense stymied in tough defeat by St. Viator Friday, Aug. 31.

The Final Score:  St. Viator 21, Deerfield 3 Warriors’ Star Performer: Jacob Balder, 7 tackles Other Notable Warrior Performances: Alec Frank 16 carries, 67 yards. Michael Maki 22-yard field goal and 4 punts for an average of 44 yards. Brett Freedberg had a 63-yard kickoff return. Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine South 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. Nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week: Niles West's Jewell Loyd, Deerfield's Danny Katz, Glenbrook North's Mark Johnson, Highland Park's Jake Norcia, Loyola Academy's Kathleen Stralka.

More than 8,000 votes were cast in last week's competition and Deerfield's Artie Bess was named Patch Athlete of the Week.  The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 20 - Feb. 26: Kathleen Stralka, senior, girl’s basketball, Loyola Academy – Stralka scored a team-high 10 points in Loyola’s 31-26 win over Glenbrook South. The victory gave the Ramblers the Class 4A New Trier Sectional championship and Loyola advanced to play Wheeling in the Stevenson Super-Sectional. Danny Katz, senior, boys track, Deerfield – Katz won the long jump, triple jump and 55-meter intermediate hurdles at the Buffalo Grove quad last week. Katz’s three victories helped the Warriors win the meet, beating Conant, Prairie Ridge and Buffalo Grove. Mark Johnson, …

Nominees for Athlete of the Week: Maine South's Jacqui Grant, New Trier's M.J. Pritchard, Evanston's Terrell Farmby, Deerfield's Christine Stitcher and Niles North's Karol Mlynarski

More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. The nominees for Athlete of the Week: New Trier's Maggie Lyon, Deerfield's Zach Cole, Niles West's Ryan Miller, Niles North's Billy Voitik and Highland Park's Jake Zuckerman.

More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22: Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. Cole averaged a score of 228.36 in the Northern Illinois Boys Bowling Conference this year. (Watch a video of Cole, perfect game, here.) More than 1,500 votes were cast in last week's contest and Maine South's Nina Duric was proclaimed the winner. The following nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 2 - Jan. 8, are: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. The senior guard had missed much of the early season with a wrist injury. Alex Sacks, senior, basketball, Deerfield – Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. Deerfield Drops Two Spots to No. 10 in Power Rankings

Patch's latest basketball power rankings.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Niles West, Loyola and Glenbrook North made waves at early holiday tournaments, but a number of girls teams struggled. All of the area’s boys teams were off, resting and preparing for a full slate of games between Christmas and New Years. New Trier and Glenbrook North will go to the always-tough Proviso West tournament while Glenbrook South and Highland Park will try out the first annual Hinsdale South tournament. For all teams, this is the last batch of non-conference games before the meat of their conference schedules get under way in 2012. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Basketball teams got their last games in before participating in holiday tournaments over the next two weeks. New Trier and Maine South have separated themselves so far as the two schools with above-average boys and girls teams, but the next four aren’t too far off. Glenbrook North, Evanston, Niles North and Deerfield all jumped two spots from last week while Highland Park had the biggest drop, going from seventh to 11th. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 5 RANKINGS 1. New Trier  (1) – New Trier’s 54-53 win over Waukegan showed they have the ability to win tough games on the road. Patch's Basketball Rankings - Week 4

Deerfield jumped up one spot after the boys team got a big win.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. All the talk at the start of the girls season was about the three-team race for the CSL South title between Niles West, Maine South and New Trier. Yet in mid-December, the last remaining undefeated team is Glenbrook South. New Trier still seems to be the class of the CSL on the boys side, especially after Glenbrook North fell to Deerfield last week. Maine South jumped up to No. 2 and is our biggest riser this week.
