Village Board learns of savings at Monday meeting. Temporary sign proposal moves forward.
Deerfield residents and small businesses who are part of the Village’s electrical aggregation program saved approximately $2.2 million in the effort’s first year, according to a report presented at Monday’s Village Board of Trustees meeting. Andrew Lichterman, the assistant to Village Manager Kent Street, gave the Trustees the information of the aggregation’s first-year results as part of his presentation of the annual report on the Administrative department he oversees. Consortium customers are expected to save about 17 percent compared to ComEd.
North Shore Electricity Aggregation customers will save about $366 on average through the first 12 months of participation, compared to Commonwealth Edison (“ComEd”) residential electricity rates, according to a joint village press release. For the second year of the electrical aggregation Consortium's three-year contract, customer's will receive electricity at 4.990 cents per kilowatt-hour (“kWh”) for June 2013 through May 2014, according to the release. This is a three percent increase over the current Consortium rate of 4.836 cents/kWh, and results in savings of more than 17 percent compared to ComEd. Village Board takes next steps while giving individuals the opportunity to choose renewable energy.
Opting for individual choice for sustainable energy rather than a municipal mandate, the Deerfield Village Board took the necessary steps to implement communal purchasing of electricity at Monday’s meeting. The Board approved four measures authorizing the Village to take necessary steps to implement the mandate approved by 74 percent of Deerfield voters in the March 20 primary election to allow a consortium of eight communities to purchase its own electricity. Consortium of north suburbs will ask voters whether or not they should seek bids for an alternate electric supplier to ComEd.
Amid a slew of local races and the Republican primary, there’s one issue on the March 20 ballots that could impact every voter’s wallet: electrical aggregation. The municipalities of Northbrook, Deerfield, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Park Ridge and Skokie have formed a group called the North Shore Electricity Aggregation Consortium. Voters in each community are being asked if they want the consortium to act on their behalf by bundling electric accounts and seeking bids for electricity on the open market rather than continuing to buy power from Commonwealth Edison.
