Dream Comes True for Avenue Fashions Owner

After years in Chicago and Lincolnwood, Sandy Panuce opens her dream shop in Deerfield Square.

Sandy Panuce may be relatively new to the Deerfield merchant community, but the owner of Avenue Fashions has been in the apparel business all her life. It has been a family endeavor for over 60 years.  When she opened her Deerfield location on May 1, 2011, it was the culmination of what she hoped to achieve in the retail business. Recently, she took time to answer five questions for Patch.  What led you to open Avenue Fashions in Deerfield? I like the mall and Deerfield is in between Highland Park, Lake Forest, Northbrook, Riverwoods, Glenview and Glencoe.  Why is Deerfield a good community for the Avenue Fashions? The people in Deerfield helped me reenergize myself. These are very nice people. This is a location where people are going …

Gand Makes Village Music Store a Local Institution

When next year rolls around, Gand’s retail and teaching business will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Deerfield.

The Village Music Store has been around Deerfield under the direction of Bob Gand for 49 years offering lessons to children as young as 6 and adults as old as 65.  When Gand is not teaching or selling both instruments and music, you may see him running around the Village Streets. He has finished five marathons—the last one was in 2005—and continues to run races.  People can also see Gand leading concerts on Wednesday evenings each summer outside Starbucks Plaza or performing at different events throughout the Village all year around. Teaching and playing for others are passions. Gand recently took the time from his busy schedule to answer five questions for Patch. What led you to open the Village Music Store?  “When I graduated from the …

Swanson Blossom Shop Speaks to Generations

Family business is in its second generation and so are the customers.

Swansons Blossom Shop owners Abe and Helen Schneider expected a nice retirement in 1983 when they sold Swanson the Florist on Western Avenue in Chicago after operating the then 87-year old North Side institution for 25 years. After five years, Abe Schneider, then 68, heard Deerfield’s long time Blossom Shop was for sale. Retirement was over. Earlier: Best Florist Award Goes to Swanson’s “He said ‘don’t worry, it’s a small little shop, no weddings, no nights, no Sundays,’” Helen Schneider said describing how her husband broke the news to her that their retirement was over. What the Schneiders expected to become a pastime turned into anything but as their customers from the city discovered they were back in business. “At least once a week …

DYBA Head Lives American Dream

Beth Sciaretta has built a successful business and runs a Deerfield institution.

The story of Deerfield Youth Baseball and Softball Association (DYBA) Commissioner Beth Sciaretta is nothing short of the embodiment of the American dream. Though she started before arriving in Deerfield 15 years ago, Sciaretta has built a successful business (Sciaretta Enterprises), raised the status of females in the DYBA and married the man of her dreams. The business began before she moved to the Village. She was living in Gurnee, raising her children and trying to survive financially. “I started cleaning offices,” Sciaretta said. “I was a single parent. It was a challenge but I had to earn a living. Now we have more than 30 employees. We do anything that has to do with maintaining a property.” Maintaining a property includes complete …

Books and Hockey Make Goldberg Leader

Member of hockey and library boards talks to Patch in the latest of its People in the News series.

A lifelong love of books and ice hockey has spurred Deerfield’s Michael Goldberg into becoming a community leader hoping his time away from his family sets an example for his children. Goldberg, a lawyer by profession, sits on the board of the Deerfield Public Library and is a member of the Deerfield High School Hockey Board. Like most schools in the area, hockey is a club sport at Deerfield with no assistance from the athletic department making parent involvement critical. Earlier: Kedjidjian Cherishes Deerfield Values One of the reasons he got involved was his son, Danny Goldberg, a hockey player who joined the Warriors this year as a freshman. Michael Goldberg was a long time hockey player who was recruited for the job in Deerfield by …
