Defenders Set up Warrior Offense

Key turnovers forced by the Deerfield High School football team’s defense paved the way for key Warrior scores.

A key sack by senior nose guard Brian McCann and subsequent pressure on Highland Park quarterback Tommy Sutker provided the emotional lift necessary assure a 24-17 Deerfield High School victory Friday over the Township High School District 113 rival Giants. After Deerfield took a 14-3 lead into halftime, the Giants recovered an onside kick to start the second half and made the score 14-10 three minutes later. On the ensuing kickoff, Highland Park got the ball back again and was preparing to take the lead. Warriors Upend Giants for Shields Trophy

Deerfield High School football team outlasts District 113 rival Highland Park to become playoff eligible.

The Final Score:        Deerfield 24, Highland Park 17 Warriors’ Star Performers:             Brian McCann had two key sacks which blunted Highland Park progress giving his team momentum that led to two scores. Fullback Landon Hinds ran for 74 yards and quarterback Ben Ethridge rushed for 72 more. Giants’ Star Performers:      Tommy Sutker completed 10 of 24 passes for 119 yards and ran for an additional 142. Josh Pollack booted a pair of onside kicks to put his team back in the game.           Other Notable Warrior Performances:       John Purdy intercepted a pass to end a Highland Park drive enabling the offense to score what turned out to be the final field goal. Warriors Ready for Giant Invasion

Playoff berth is on the line for Deerfield High School football team today against rival Highland Park.

Students and fans of the Deerfield High School football team may be putting extra emphasis on today’s 7:30 p.m. game with Township High School District 113 rival Highland Park at Adams Field, but the Warriors themselves have a different mindset. The game may be Senior Night and a potential playoff berth is riding on a victory over the Giants, but Coach Steve Winiecki is not looking beyond the X’s and O’s on his board and won’t let the players do much else either. Warriors Use Opportunity When It Arrives

DHS coach stresses being ready for opportunities and a lot of Warriors were there Friday as winning streak goes to three.

A combination of game changing plays and utilizing opportunities made the difference for the Deerfield High School football team Friday in its 34-28 victory over Niles North in Skokie. There was no shortage of Warriors adding their stamp to the win. Earlier: Warriors Outlast Nile North, 34-28 Whether it was Deerfield’s Brett Freedberg intercepting a Billy Voitek pass at the Warrior two-yard line and returning it 98 yards for a touchdown or Will Higginson using as much brain as skill smothering a live ball on a kickoff by his team. “You never know when you’re going to have an opportunity,” Steve Winiecki said. “That’s why I always tell them to be ready.” Freedberg’s interception may have been the biggest game changing opportunity of the …

Warriors Outlast Niles North, 34-28

DHS football team’s big plays make the difference as Warriors even season record at 4-4.

The Final Score:  Deerfield 34, Niles North 28  Warriors’ Star Performers:             Brett Freedberg intercepted a pass on the Viking two-line returning it 98 yards to give Deerfield what turned out to be the winning touchdown. Jake Balder scored a on a four-yard run, threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Ben Weiss and broke loose for an 80-yard run with 3:28 left in the contest to give help secure the victory. Other Notable Warrior Performances:       William Higginson recovered a loose Warrior kickoff untouched by any Viking with 4:05 left in the second quarter to set up a 27-yard scoring drive capped by a Ben Ethridge’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Sam Modro. Warriors Brace for Viking Air Attack

Deerfield High School football team travels to Niles North for Central Suburban League game today.

Deerfield High School’s football team spent much of the week sharpening its aerial defenses in preparation for a Niles North team that will give the Warriors a different look at 7 p.m. today in Skokie. In its dominant wins the last two games against Maine West and Maine East, most of Deerfield’s defensive effort was against a ground game described by Coach Steve Winiecki as smash mouth football. Solid Practice Explodes into Performance for DHS Football Team

Extra work helps with scoring from special teams and defense. Warriors learning to take the game one play at a time.

A return to a normal practice routine produced results that were anything but for the Deerfield High School football team in its 48-6 victory Friday over Maine East. After having one less day to prepare for its last two games because of the school calendar, the Warriors had time to work on individual techniques more than they had in practice last week and fruits of the labor blossomed in splendid fashion. Earlier: Warrior Dominate Maine East, 48-6 Coach Steve Winiecki had his Warriors using the extra time to concentrate on blocking skills, tackling and the kicking game as well as preparation for the Blue Demons. Warriors Dominate Maine East, 48-6

Special teams score three touchdowns for DHS football team, offense scores two and defense adds another.

The Final Score:  Deerfield 48, Maine East 6  Warriors’ Star Performers:             Sam Modro returned a pair of punts for touchdowns and reached the end zone a third time when he recovered a fumble and ran it in. Brett Freedberg scored two touchdowns, one on a 66-yard run and the other on a 65-yard kickoff return. Other Notable Warrior Performances:       The entire Deerfield defensive unit. Nearly all defenders got into the action as Deerfield recovered three fumbles, made three interceptions, limited the Blue Demons to only three downs on six different posessions and limited Maine East to 37 yards in Warrior territory all night. DHS Football Team Gets More Practice

Warriors tackle Maine East Friday after first full schedule of workouts since third week of season.

Controlling tempo of the game will be a key for the Deerfield High School football team (2-4) when it meets Maine East (2-4) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Park Ridge after its first full week of practice in three weeks. After defeating Maine West, 35-7, in front of a homecoming crowd Friday at Adams Field, Coach Steve Winiecki recognizes what the Warriors will have to do against a big Blue Demon team. Maine East has the ability to keep Deerfield’s defense on the field. From pep rallies to a dance and other student organized activities, Deerfield High School celebrated Homecoming Friday and Saturday. Patch has captured highlights from the weekend in pictures from the time the crowds were filling up the Exhibition Gym for Friday’s pep rally through the football victory over Maine West. Earlier: Olympian Alumna Makes DHS Homecoming Appearance After students and community members filled the gym for Friday’s pep rally, all fall athletic teams ran into the gym as they were announced.
