On the Blog Post Rotarians hear debate over District 113 referendum

ReplyObviously this unnamed "HP Senior" who was not present at this luncheon meeting has already pre-judged their position on this controversial community issue. The article is fair and balanced, giving both sides the opportunity to share their thoughts within the allotted 15-minutes given. The moderator only introduced the speakers. moderated the debate from a timing standpoint, and moderated follow-up questions from the audience. She was not quoted in the article. Those who attended will be the judge of the story's accuracy. Ed Collins

On the article Poll: Should Education Be Funded Primarily Through Property Taxes?
Ed Collins

ReplySeniors here living here on fixed incomes, whose children have long graduated from local schools are losing their homes because of the outrageous increases in school taxes. Frequent referendums seeking additional taxes, unionized teaching staff, and over-compensated administrators have turned local school districts into have and have-not fiefdoms, operating on a "can you top this basis."

On the article Poll: Should Armed Guards Be In Every School?
Ed Collins
7:35 am on Sunday, December 23, 2012
ReplyArmed guards in EVERY school is not the answer in preventing mass murder. They can (and have) occurred in a variety of public places. A ban on assault weapons is absolutely essential, along with more rigid regulation of weapons at the point of sale.

On the article Sharp Pencil May Ease Residents’ Tax Burden

ReplyThis is good news to us stressed-out seniors who are trying to save our Deerfield homes. The Mayor, the Trustees, and Mr. Burk are to be commended for using a sharp pencil in whittling down the proposed local tax levy, and its adoption is encouraged on Monday night. Let's hope that the County Board and our local school districts follow this good example.

On the article Letter to the Editor: No Extra Sales Tax for Deerbrook

ReplySteve -- The authorship of my Letter to the Editor is confusing. Right under the primary headline and subsequent deck, is your byline, giving the impression that you are editorializing as the author (which I think would be a good idea). However, only when one reaches the end of the article does it clearly indicate that the authorship is mine. Hopefully this note clarifies that, and dissenters can blame me, not you, for my pontifications. Thanks for running my comments. I welcome any reactions. -- Ed Collins

Great suggestion, Mike. It's win-win for both District 113 and its taxpayers. I hope the new School Board seriously considers your proposal.
