Hometown Columbus, Ohio
Birthday November 7
Bio I graduated from Ohio University with a degree in journalism and experience working at The Plain Dealer and The Columbus Dispatch. I lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for four years, where I taught seventh-grade English and social studies through the Teach For America organization, and later, worked for Creative Artists Agency, a talent agency based in Los Angeles. I also tutored third-graders and freelanced for an education publication. I moved back to Ohio in August 2010 to be closer to my family and pursue a full-time job in journalism.
Your Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for you to inject your beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that your beliefs are on the record will cause you to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know.
Politics
I am liberal, but I like to hear why people have opinions different from my own. Some members of my family watch Rachel Maddow, while others tune to Fox News, so sometimes Thanksgiving can get lively.
Religion
I am not religious, but I am interested in learning about other people's beliefs.
Local Hot-Button Issues
Cleveland Heights residents care deeply about what's happening in their community, especially in their schools and public libraries. Several non-profit groups such as Reaching Heights, FutureHeights, Home Repair Resource Center and the Heights Independent Business Alliance exist to protect and promote the issues that matter to residents most, including arts in the schools, housing and local business development.

Michelle,
No story on the home invasion this past week? Horrific story that I wish were not true! The police say the family were doused with gasoline and the mother was shot with a gun. No one else has covered the story. I think it happened somtime on Tuesday or Wednesday. What say you?

Hi Michelle, I was forwarded the link to the article reported by the patch w/regards to flash mobs & stray bullets on Yorkshire. I have been a resident of Cleveland hts. since 1999, we reside in my husband's family home. The Marotta's have been here since late 60's. I absolutely would not live anywhere else, so please understand that I am not city bashing here. I've noticed many changes over the past 2 years in our city. The most egregious is the obnoxious behaviour displayed by many who feel that there noise level, cursing and general out of control behaviour are no big deal. I have taken it upon myself to politely remind them that this is not welcome in my City, We practice Civility which benefits all residents. I have been informed by another neighborhood email list that there have been recent episodes of gun shots, late night street fighting, drug dealing (suspected) and general intimidation at Renrock & Derbyshire. This is a huge problem which is not going away and we need to really mobilize our residents to the dangers of this. The bottom line is if we do not figure this out collectively we are all going to suffer the consequences. Reduced property values, blighted neighborhoods, it all stems from this. Of particular concern are the use of Section 8 vouchers, which seems in many cases to be the root of this problem, This may seem racially biased, it is not, it is a fact of socieo-economic issues which our city seems to be experiencing like never before.

The destruction of Oakwood Country Club for bix box stores to sell Chinese goods made by virtual slaves in a country with no environmental laws is eggregious. The snakes that work for the monied interests that pretend to represent the voters should be investigated by the department of justice. The environment is being attacked by developers in violation of the EPA and frderal law. It is every citizen's duty to stop this terrorist attack by South Euclid and Cleveland Heights. The two city's under the guise of emergency legislation do as their master's,not the people want, which only brings higher taxes, more crime, and more vacant homes. Hats off to the two cities for attempting to ruin the last land they have not ruined! Mission Accomplished!!

Michelle,
Was just reading your profile and noticed under Hot-Button Issues that you mentioned several Cleveland Heights organizations that are working to improve life in our community. I would like to add the Heights Community Congress to your list- an organization with a long history of working on issues of social justice, fair housing and community building. HCC held a community dialogue after the Coventry Street Fair in July, and is following up with another dialogue focused on community solutions on Monday, August 29th from 7-9pm at the Cleveland Heights Recreation Center. I hope that all your readers will attend. Thank you.
