Republicans Want Sheyman

Republicans are clamoring over the possibility of having Congressman Bob Dold face up with Ilya Sheyman in the general election.

Ilya Sheyman is just the matchup Republicans are looking for against Bob Dold. The Rothenberg Political Report and the Cook Political Report, the two most trusted names in the US for political prognostication, have both come to that conclusion.

Dave Wasserman, the US House editor of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, said today via Twitter, “GOP increasingly hopeful Rep. Bob Dold (R) could wind up facing Ilya Sheyman (D), not Brad Schneider (D), in general.”

Stuart Rothenberg, creator and editor of the Rothenberg Political Report, said in an article today in Roll Call, “Republicans, of course, would much prefer to face Sheyman in the fall because they believe they can portray him as more extreme, making the district’s upscale voters uncomfortable with his aggressive style and views. And, they believe, his age and lack of real world experience apart from political activism would benefit Dold in a general election.”

The political gurus join a number of local and national Democratic leaders, all with a strong interest in the 10th district seat turning Democratic, in seeing Brad Schneider as by far the strongest candidate to defeat Dold in November. They include US House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Former US Senator Adlai Stevenson III, State Senator Susan Garrett, State Senator Jeff Schoenberg, and Former State Rep. Julie Hamos, among many others.
