Warrior, Giant Golfers Remain in Contention at State

Defending champion Ian Kelsey of Deerfield and Highland Park's Patrick Flavin record top scores for local golfers at State Meet.

Defending state champion Ian Kelsey of Deerfield High School and Highland Park High School’s Patrick Flavin remain in contention after the first round of the State Golf Tournament today in Bloomington.

Kelsey fired a three-over par 75 including four birdies to end day in a tie for 16th place, seven strokes behind first-round leader Brian Ohr of Glenbrook North who shot a 68, according to the Illinois High School Association website. Flavin completed the day in 29th with a 77. He had a pair of birdies.

As a team Deerfield is in 11th place with a score of 320. Highland Park did not compete as a team. The Warriors qualified as a squad by winning the Huntley Sectional. Hinsdale Central is in first place at 295.

Highland Park’s other competitor, Sam Meitus, carded an 80 to complete the day in 58th place. For Deerfield, Thomas Shimamoto scored an 81 while Eric Bagg and Jack Dickman were right behind with 82’s. Jacob Krugmn fired an 83 and Sam Gascoigne had a 91.

In the girls’ competition in Decatur, Highland Park’s Kelli Ono completed the day in 27th place with a 78 while Giant Lisa Kraff’s 81 was good for 46th, according to the IHSA website. Isabelle Kane of Loyola Academy leads the field after a four-under par 68.
